Obituary

Alma Yates, 102, died April 6, 2011 in Mendota Lutheran Home, where she had lived since 1996. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church, Lockport. Interment will be at Lockport Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday in the church. Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota is assisting the family with arrangements. Mrs. Yates was born Feb. 16, 1909, at home near Dorchester, Neb., to Christian and Bertha (Asmus) Weber. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan, where she received teaching credentials and taught in the Nebraska school system until her marriage to Harry D. Yates on June 12, 1934. She completed her bachelor of science degree in education from National Lewis University in 1958. Mrs. Yates was a resident of the Lockport area for 46 years, where she taught in District 91 until her retirement in 1970. She was an active member and officer in Delta Kappa Gamma, King's Daughters, United Methodist Women and Lockport United Methodist Church. At the time of her death, she was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mendota. Mrs. Yates is survived by one son, D. Merold (Suzanne) of Bloomington; one daughter Carolyn (James) Bond of LaMoille; four grandchildren, Jill Carpenter, John Yates, Jen Dinges and Geoffrey Bond; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Katherine Lutes of Lincoln, Neb. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers and one sister. Memorials may be directed to Mendota Lutheran Home or First United Methodist Church of Lockport.
