Carol Y. Engel, 73, of Spring Valley died July 11, 2011, in Methodist Medical Center, Peoria. A private memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Merritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Maney officiating. Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery, Mendota. There will be no visitation. She was born Dec. 10, 1937, in Mendota to Ernest and Ester (Reynolds) Nance. She married Edward Engel on May 19, 1958, in Mendota. She worked as a certified nurse's assistant at St. Margaret's Hospital, Spring Valley for 16 years. She then actively volunteered at the hospital following her retirement. She is survived by two daughters, Marlene (Kevin) Merkel of Arlington and Marilyn Pennell of Neosho, Mo.; two sons, Mark Engel of La Salle and Marvin Engel of Lincoln; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ernest (Kay) Nance of South Carolina and Kenneth Nance of Mendota; and one sister, Lillian Thompson of Columbus, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson, one brother and special friend, Jack Salmon. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
