Carol R. (Ossman) Wendel, 79 of Mendota passed away December 8, 2019 in her home surrounded throughout the day with her family and friends.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Private graveside services will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota at a later date per her request.
Carol was born November 21, 1940 in Mendota to Harry Sr. and Ella (Mueller) Ossman. She married Lee Wendel August 30, 1968 in Dixon and they resided on the Wendel farm ever since.
Throughout her life she worked at the Mendota Trouser Factory and waitressed at the Couchman Inn, Sublette and Parkway Restaurant, Mendota for many years. Anybody who knew Carol knew the passion and love she had for all furry animals. A shelter was built at the farm so she could pursue her dream and for over 30 years she ran the Sauk Valley Humane Society. She was named Woman of the Week in 1979 for the love and care of animals.
She is survived by her husband Lee of Mendota; her brother Harry (Cathy) Ossman, Jr.; her children Robert Lewis, Kathy Zimmerly, Dawn Cores and Terry Wendel; stepchildren Susan (Hugh) McCoy and Connie (Jon) Yambert; and blessed with 21 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson John L. Zimmerly and step daughter Sherry Zerbe.
Memorials may be directed to the Sublette Fire and Ambulance Departments.
