Catherine A. Howell, 82, of Rockford, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Amberwood Care Center, Rockford.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Mendota with Father Jeff Windy officiating. Private burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Amboy at a later date. Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota on April 15, 2023.
Catherine was born November 13, 1940 in Amboy to Louis and Marie (Morrissey) Shannon. She married William Howell on August 4, 1969.
Cathy graduated from Amboy High School in 1958 and spent her entire working career in finance, retiring from American General Finance in Rockford. She was an excellent cook, and one of her joys in life, along with helping people, was entertaining and serving delicious meals on holidays and other occasions. She and her husband, Bill, especially enjoyed their times at Lake Ripley in Cambridge, Wisconsin with family and friends.
She is survived by her brother Robert Shannon of Pompano Beach, Florida; stepdaughter Joy McKenzie of Port St. Lucie, Florida; stepson Bill Howell of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; step grandson Chris McKenzie and family of Port St. Lucie, Florida and also numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. Cathy was especially close with her sister Rosemary's family, including nieces Kathi (Bob) Sheridan, Peggy (Dave) Joerger, Patty (Ron) Contreras and Barb (Chris) Notz and nephews Jim Stephenitch and Gene (Cindy) Stephenitch.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2003, four brothers John Shannon, Ray Shannon Ned Shannon and Jim Shannon and her sister Rosemary Shannon Stephenitch, two nephews and one niece.
Memorials may be directed to American Parkinson Disease Association or the donor's choice.
