Celeste M. Schmitt, 95, of Mendota, passed away Monday, October 23, 2023 at Allure of Mendota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 27, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Mendota with Father Jeff Windy officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendota. Per her wishes there will be no visitation.

Celeste was born July 31, 1928 in Mendota, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Ellen (Granfield) Hochstatter. She graduated from Mendota High School in 1946 and worked at Sears Roebuck and Company in Mendota until her marriage to James "Stymie" Schmitt on August 13, 1960 at Holy Cross Church.

She was a devoted wife, mother and member of Holy Cross Church. She volunteered for several years at Mendota Area Christian Food Pantry and helped her husband deliver Meals on Wheels when his health declined.

Celeste is survived by her three children, Jim (Wendy) Schmitt, Dan (Jenny Bumba) Schmitt and Lisa (John) Corcoran; 4 grandchildren Kelsey (Sebastian), Lauren (Justin), Austin and Alexis; sister Jeanne Hochstatter and sister in law Arlene Schmitt both of Mendota. The family is grateful for the care shown by the staff at Allure these last two months. She especially enjoyed playing bingo alongside her sister Jeanne. We also wish to thank Dr. Chinn and her staff, OSF St. Paul Medical Center Meals on Wheels and their delivery drivers and the Schuhler family for their aid in allowing Mom to stay in her home these last 12 years. "There is no place like home".

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on January 12, 2012, four sisters Bernice Killelea, Lorraine Henkel, Marilyn McInerney and Patrica Love, ten brothers Curtis, Benny, Marty, Wilmer, Paul, Harold, LaVerne, Raphael, Greg and Norbert and two foster brothers Rich and Ron Milazzo.
