Charles L. Berger, of Mendota, Illinois, passed away on July 27, 2025, at OSF St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford, Illinois, with his loving wife of 64 years by his side.
Charles was born on July 7, 1939, in Murrayville, Illinois, to Charles and Frances Berger. After high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a military police officer. Following his service, Charles began a long and dedicated career at Caterpillar in Aurora, Illinois, where he worked for 31 years. After retiring, he continued working with his son Chuck at Berger Trucking for another 31 years.
Charles was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to everyone. He will be remembered for his unwavering love, kindness, and deep commitment to his family. His heart was especially full for his beloved wife, Elaine (Vermillion) Berger, and their three children: Susan Moore-Berger, Chuck (Connie) Berger, and Peggy (Steven) Sorenson.
He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his son, James (Jimmy); his grandson, William (Billy); and his two brothers, Robert and Frank.
His legacy of love, strength, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Cremation care has been provided. A memorial service will take place at 12:00 pm on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Horner-Merritt Funeral Home, 800 Monroe Street, in Mendota with Pastor Elise Rothfusz officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the service at the funeral home.
