Obituary

Darlene M Dempsey 91, of Mendota, passed away peacefully Friday October 20, 2023, in her home surrounded by family.

A private family graveside service will be held at Restland Cemetery, Mendota with Rev. Brian Kelly officiating. Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota is assisting the family.

She was born October 29, 1931 in Earlville to Alfred and Clara (Kelly) Matheisus. She attended Mendota High School and graduated in 1949. She married Jerry Dempsey June 30, 1950 in Mendota. They shared 59 years together.

Darlene was preceded in death by both parents, her husband, sister and an infant great grandson.

She was survived by her children Barb (Jerry) Fischer of Cincinnati OH., Terri (Lynn) Holzner of Mendota, Rick (Marcia) Dempsey of Suquamish WA., and Candi (Phil Bridges) Reppin of Mendota. Her grandchildren Tami, Jennifer, Scott, Krissi, Hollie, Rachel, Brian, Susan, Jonathan, Chris. Fifteen great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren. A brother-in-law, niece and two nephews.

While most of her life was spent working in the insurance industry, her last held working position was at Blackstone School as a cafeteria assistant. She enjoyed all the little smiles and high fives from the kids.  This soon became her favorite job as it was more than just opening a milk carton, she looked forward to seeing the kids. She always found time to go to volleyball and basketball games. She was a season ticket holder for many years watching Mendota football. Darlene really was a true Trojan fan and wore her purple and gold with pride. It wasn't just high school games, you could often find her watching a college or professional basketball, volleyball, or football game. Darlene was an avid sport fan.

Darlene was a fan of music. She herself played drums and piano. During Rick and Candi's High School years she enjoyed listening and watching them perform in band competitions. She enjoyed the Big Band type tunes but never missed a chance to listen to Tom Jones.

Special thank you to the caregivers Michelle, Debbie and Bonnie who provided great care over the last several months. We will be forever grateful for the times you put your lives on hold to be here to care for our loved one.

Memorials may be directed to Mendota High School Band.
