Obituary

William Richard "Dick" Setchell, 73 of Mendota passed away on Saturday, December 28th 2019, after a brief journey with cancer.

Visitation will be Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota followed by a celebration of life at 3 p.m. with Rev. Kent Svendsen officiating. Private burial at Restland Cemetery, Mendota will be at a later date.

Dick was born on February 24, 1946 in Mendota to Bill and Lois (Sibigtroth) Setchell and was the oldest of four children. His early years were spent growing up on the family farm where he raised livestock. Dick graduated from Mendota Township High School in 1964. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University, majoring in Political Science and Theology, and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. After college, Dick married and had two daughters, Amy (Andy) Sherman and Laura (James) Younger. During this time he farmed and owned several businesses.

Dick married Patti Hitchins on January 18, 1997 and became the proud step-father of Tracy (Marc Foskett) Aughenbaugh Franklin, and Molly (Matt Gay) Aughenbaugh. He retired from his business Ekana Landscaping. Dick was an avid historian and antique collector. He was particularly interested in antique firearms and Native American artifacts. He enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, and debating spiritual or political matters. He was also very invested in passing on family history and traditions. Dick was involved with his community by serving in the Rotary in which he received the Paul Harris Fellow. He was active in church council and helped with church youth groups and confirmation classes.

Dick is survived by his wife, Patricia, daughters Amy and Laura, step-daughters Tracy and Molly, 6 grandchildren, Xander, Sam, Jillian, Elana, Robbie, and Eric, brother Randy (Marzita) Setchell, sister Marilee (Leo) Smith, and many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Susan Setchell.

Memorials may be directed to Lurie's Children's Hospital, Illinois Valley Animal Rescue, Safe House Animal Rescue and the Northbrook Middle School Band Program
