Donald Abbott, 76, of Mendota died June 19, 2010, in his Mendota residence. Services will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, with the Rev. Michael Morrell officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Mr. Abbott was born July 31, 1933, in Walnut to Reuben and Jessie (Service) Abbott. He married Bette Bromenschenkel on April 27, 1956, in Mendota. He was a 1951 graduate of Mendota High School. He served with the U.S. Navy 1951-1955 during the Korean War. He later established the Trojan Standardbred horse farm in Mendota. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mendota, VFW Lodge 4079, U.S. Navy Cruisers Association, Elks Lodge 1212 and La Salle-Peru Horseshow Club. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Robin (Brooks) Laning of Seattle, Wash., Jill Abbott of Hennepin and Jessica Wanken of Clarion, Iowa; nine grandchildren; one step-grandchild; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Norma Fonderoli of Dalzell. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial to be established later.
