Donald R. Hitchins, 83, formerly of Mendota, passed away on Feb. 20, 2016 at the Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home in El Paso, Texas where he was a resident.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Restland Cemetery, Mendota with military rites by VFW Post 4079. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota.
Donald was born March 12, 1932 in Mendota to George and Lena (Mathesius) Hitchins. He married Leatrice Eichorn on June 6, 1953.
Survivors include the mother of his children; two daughters, Diana (Joe) Villastrigo and Dawn (Sidney) Thomas, both of El Paso, Texas; one brother-in-law, Ken Kreiser of Mendota; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Hitchins of Mendota; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Hitchins and one sister, Gladys Kreiser.
Donald graduated from Mendota High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from March 10, 1954 to March 9, 1956 and is a veteran of the Korean War. He farmed in Ophir Township.
