Donald N. Schimmer, 79, of Mendota died Oct. 6, 2008, in Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Mendota. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Holy Cross Church, Mendota, with the Revs. Fredi Gomez Torres, Dale Maloy and Gary Blake officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Mr. Schimmer was born June 15, 1929, in Hastings, Neb., to Harry P. and Margaret (Ernsdorf) Schimmer. He married Mary Margaret Wiezorek on Aug. 29, 1953, in La Salle. He graduated from Mendota High School in 1947. He worked with his father at Schimmer's Garage in West Brooklyn, which was a Conoco gas station and Pontiac-Dodge distributorship. In 1945 his father founded Schimmer Pontiac Co. at Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue in Mendota. The Buick- Oldsmobile dealership was acquired in 1978 and the Chevrolet dealership in 1982. The Schimmer dealership moved to its present location on Route 251 south of Mendota in 1989. Mr. Schimmer, along with his son, Jeff, and daughter, Dona, purchased the Ford-Lincoln- Mercury dealership in Peru in 1991. He served on the Pontiac dealer council during the 1970s and in the 1980s he served on the Buick dealer council. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Elks Lodge 1212, Mendota Moose Lodge and Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of Mendota Rotary Club and member of Mayan Beach Club and Lago Mar Club, both in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He is survived by his wife of Mendota; two daughters, Sheree (Jim) Valukas of Burr Ridge and Dona (Joe) Scharff of Sugar Grove; one son, Jeff (Kim) Schimmer of Mendota; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to Holy Cross School, Mendota.
