Donald "Doc" Swope, 89, of Compton, passed away August 2, 2024 in his home.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 12:00 p.m., at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota with Rev. Mary Bohall officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of services.
Donald was born on January 8, 1935 in Compton to Wendell and Elizabeth (Kehm) Swope. He married Patricia Bettner on November 24, 1956. He attended Compton High School for two years and then graduated from Lee Center High School.
Doc was employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation. After retirement he helped area farmers with planting and harvest, which was his real passion. He loved working the ground and driving a tractor. He also spent many hours of mowing and plowing snow for the Village of Compton. He took great pride in making sure the streets were cleared for the citizens of the town. Doc was a very civic-minded individual who gave countless hours to his community by serving on the Village Board, Compton Fire Department and the Compton Community Club for 50+ years.
Doc is survived by his daughters Lori Swope and Tini (Chuck) Montavon both of Compton; his son Tim Swope of Oregon, Illinois; granddaughters Jeni (Clifton Noble) Montavon, Michelle (Gabe) Wade, Kim (Don) Wisinski and his sister Marilyn Ehlers of Princeton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his daughter Geneva, his son Dani, grandson Jeffrey Montavon, his sister LaVila Bains and brothers Elroy, Marvin and Jerroll Swope.
