Obituary

Doris A. Mellott, 86, of Mendota, passed away on December 25, 2021 at OSF St. Paul Medical Center, Mendota surrounded by her family.
She was born on June 11, 1935 to the late Laurence and Josephine (Sondgeroth) Amfahr and grew up one of six children on the family dairy farm. She graduated from Mendota High School in 1953. She married her husband Don on October 10, 1959 and they became the parents of four children and resided in West Brooklyn, IL. Doris worked at Wayside Press in Mendota as a press operator and then at Sauer- Sundstrand in Peru as a secretary for over 25 years until her retirement in 2000.
Doris enjoyed going to watch her grandchildren in all their sporting events, piano recitals, musical productions, and graduation ceremonies. She was always there whenever her grandchildren or children needed her. Doris was an avid Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls and Chicago Bears fan. She enjoyed going to a Chicago Cubs game whenever one of her grandchildren or children could take her. She was even able to go to a Championship game when the Chicago Cubs defeated the Cardinals and was thrilled to see the Cubs win the World Series. She also enjoyed going to watch her beloved Cubs play in Phoenix Arizona and spend time with her granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband on December 22, 1971, by her parents Laurence and Josephine Amfahr, and by one sister, Laurine Harms.
Survivors include three daughters, Debbie Lonie of Utica, Deanna (Thad) Zdunich of Serena, and Denise (David) Mallery of Hennepin, and one son Duane (Cindy) Mellott of Gilbertsville, KY, six grandchildren, Meghan (Kyle) Morrison of Blue Grass, IA, Jake Zdunich of Ottawa, Bryton Mellott of Tuscaloosa, AL, Brandy Mellott of Tolleson, AZ, Alicia Mallery of Phoenix, AZ and Owen Mallery of Hennepin, and three sisters, Verona Whitmore, Carol Fischer and Roberta Lauer, all of Mendota and a brother, Henry Amfahr of Merced, CA.
A private family visitation will be held Thursday, December 30 from noon until 1 p.m. at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota followed by a public Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Church, Mendota with Father Jeff Windy officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendota.
Pallbearers will be Meghan Morrison, Jake Zdunich, Bryton Mellott, Brandy Mellott, Alicia Mallery, Owen Mallery and Jason Bauer.
