Dorothy A. Engel, 77, of Mendota died Sept. 2, 2008, in St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford. Services will be at noon Friday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, with the Rev. Dale Dykstra officiating. Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m.-noon Friday at the funeral home. She was born May 5, 1931, in Nashville, Ind., to Charles and Helen (Lafferty) Carlisle. She married Albert Engel on Dec. 1, 1951, in Mendota. She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Mendota, and a past elder of the church. She was a certified nurse's aide at Mendota Lutheran Home and Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mendota for more than 30 years. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Alan (Michele) Engel of Mendota and Dale Engel of Chicago; two daughters, Terry (William) Arjes of Mendota and Betty Sue Engel of Denham Springs, La.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, John (Sylvia) Carlisle of La Salle; one sister, Ruth Miller of Peru; and one half sister, Gertrude Vezain of Ottawa. She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Memorials may be directed to the American Liver Foundation.
