Obituary

Elaine M. Setchell, 91 of Mendota passed away on January 7, 2020, in the Mendota Lutheran Home.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Mendota with Rev. Mary Bohall officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation will be from noon until time of services at the church. Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota is handling arrangements.

Elaine was born in Chicago on September 12, 1928, the daughter of Crystal Spears Miller and Robert Phalen.

She was raised on a farm in Clarion Township by her grandmother, Hattie Spears and G. Frederick Meyers. She attended Mendota schools and graduated from Mendota High School in 1945. She married Floyd Setchell on February 8, 1946 and they resided on a farm, east of Mendota ever since. Elaine was an outstanding mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to all who knew her. She never missed a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion for anyone. She worked in retail sales in Mendota for many years, then several years in the accounting department of Hart Carter, and followed that by CNA work at Mendota Lutheran Home. She was a member of Easter Star, United Methodist Women, Mendota Business and Professional Women's Club, and the local unit of TOPS.

Mrs. Setchell is survived by her four sons, John (Teresa) Setchell, Jeff (Diane) Setchell, Tim (Julie) Setchell of Mendota, Tom (Jane) Setchell of Sarasota, Florida, and daughter Carol (Paul) Ramer of Mendota; 14 grandchildren John D., Toby, Justin, Tyler, Brad, and Will Setchell, Matt Ramer, Joanne McNally, Jessica Sondgeroth, Katy Mathes, Tricia Leigh, Lauren Wallenberg, Mindy Matney and Michelle Beaty; 2 step-grandchildren, Matt Westerman and Kristen Saylor; 30 great grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; a brother, Bruce (Shirley) Miller of LaMoille; a sister Kathleen Currie of Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd in 2018, son Charles in 2006, her brothers Donald Miller and Patrick Phalen, and sisters Constance Truti and Colleen Greenwood.
