Elmo Steele, 88, of Mendota died May 11, 2010, in Heartland Nursing Home, Casey. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, with the Rev. Michael Morrell officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota, with military rites by VFW Post 4079. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Monday in the funeral home. He was born June 24, 1921, in Oakland City, Ind., to Carl and Mamie Steele. He married Doris Bottom on March 14, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Italy in World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mendota and had owned and operated Steele Jewelry Store with his wife since March 1946. He is survived by one son, Gary Steele of Wichita, Kan.; one daughter, Paula DeWitt of Westfield; four grandchildren; and one brother, Nolan Steele of Mendota. He was preceded in death by his wife on March 2, 2005; and three brothers, two in infancy. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church or donor's choice.
