Eugene Frank Smania, 78, of Mendota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at his home. Gene was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in LaSalle on May 19, 1948, to Frank F. Smania and Udilia Bedini.

Gene attended Virginia High School in Illinois. He also graduated from ISU and started his career as a teacher. He taught history and driver’s education at Virginia High School for one year. He was later employed by the State of Illinois with IDOT for 36 years. He was also a member of Holy Cross Church.

Gene married the love of his life, Linda Kroesen, in 1989. They enjoyed 14 years together before her passing in 2003.

He was an avid hiker with the Starved Rock Lodge Walkers Club for many years. Gene loved gardening and never missed a chance to strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He proudly served four years with the U.S. Army, two years in Germany and two years in the United States.

Gene is survived by his brother, Robert Smania of Springfield; two nieces, Sarah and Rachel Smania; and several great-nieces and nephews, Daisy, Bauer, Zeke, Xavi and River.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Linda.

Visitation for Gene will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 9, at Holy Cross Church in Mendota. A Memorial Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church, with Father Fortunatus Rwehikiza officiating. Burial will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery in LaSalle.
