Evelyn Lamps, 91, of Mendota died Oct. 5, 2011, in her residence. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in St. John's Lutheran Church, Mendota, with the Rev. Dale Peterson officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Arrangements were provided by Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. She was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Harris Hospital, Mendota, to Herman and Rose (Ehlers) Lamps. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was an adviser to the church's Luther League, member of its Mary- Deb Circle, and sang in both the junior and senior choir. For many years she was an adviser to Project Day at the church and a member of the Altar Guild. Evelyn was educated at the old Blackstone School, Lincoln Grade School and graduated from Mendota High School in 1941. She was employed by Kroger Grocery and Bakery Co. and later at Conco Engineering Works in Mendota. She enrolled at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, with a major in education and European history, graduating in 1959. She then earned a masters degree in social studies in 1971 from the University of Illinois. She was a teacher at Northbrook School for 25 years. She is survived by two nephews, John (Debbie) Coakley of Warrenville and James (Margit Kindel) Coakley of Appleton, Wis.; two great-nephews; and three great-nieces. She was preceded in death by one sister, Adeline. Memorials may be directed to the family for distribution to various charities.
