Frank J. Furar, 78, of Compton died Feb. 6, 2009, in St. Margaret's Hospital, Spring Valley. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Church, West Brooklyn, with the Rev. Edward Hughes officiating. Burial will be at Melugin Grove Cemetery, Brooklyn Township. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday. Merritt Funeral Home provided the arrangements. Mr. Furar was born Dec. 25, 1930, in La Salle to John and Mary (Belle) Furar, Sr. He married Shirley Blanchard on Dec. 1, 1951, in Spring Valley. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the destroyer Small and the heavy cruiser Quincy. He was a member of VFW Post 4079. He had been employed by Westclox, Rock Island Railroad, Mayrath Industries and Farmer's Factory in Lee before his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Compton; one daughter, Jerene (Hank Senn) Furar of Compton; three sons, David (Melissa) Furar of Mendota, Darrell (Kristen) Furar of Compton and Paul (Lynn) Furar of LaMoille; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Ronald (Isabelle) Furar of Oglesby; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Dale; one daughter, Deanna; three children in infancy, one grandson and one brother. Memorials may be directed to Mendota VFW Post 4079.
