George D. Duncan, 97, of Mendota, passed away peacefully, Saturday August 5, 2022 at Allure of Mendota.
Private family only services will be Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota with Vicar Anthony Windau officiating. Private burial will follow at Melugin Grove Cemetery, Compton with military honors by Mendota VFW Post 4079.
George was born February 9, 1926 in Harrisburg, Il. to Leslie and Ruth (Horning) Duncan. He grew up during the Depression. George graduated in 1944 from Lincoln High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1944-1946 and was wounded at the Battle of Okinawa.
George married Joan Sonnie on December 27, 1952. He attended Purdue University and earned his bachelors degree in secondary education. He later graduated Northern Illinois University with a masters degree in guidance. George was a great teacher, coach, guidance counselor and school administrator. The majority of his career was spent in the St. Charles area.
Along with his wife Joan, George distributed countless Gideon Bibles over the years. He was a member of the American Legion. He went to Jefferson Junior High in Naperville for 10 years to speak to students about WWII. George was known as a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He is survived by his son Gary; 3 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joan in 2002, his son Jeff in 2019 and his brother Ralph.
