George A. Johnson, 83, of Mendota passed away July 16, 2016, in his home surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Holy Cross Church, Mendota with the Rev. Peter Pilon officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, West Brooklyn with military honors by Mendota VFW Post 4079.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota with a 3:30 p.m. rosary.

George was born May 26, 1933, in Mendota to Harry "Bud" and Marion (Amsler) Johnson. He married Donna Chaon on Oct. 3, 1964, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, West Brooklyn.

George graduated from Mendota Township High School in 1951 and continued to be a lifelong Mendota Trojans fan. After high school, George served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1951 until 1955. George worked multiple jobs in various places until settling back into his home town to work more than 34 years at Wayside Press. Since the mid-1990s, George thoroughly enjoyed retirement. George was a member of Mendota Moose, a longtime member of Mendota Elks and served as a past president of Holy Cross Athletic Association.

Survivors include his four children, Jeff (Kim) Johnson of Wauconda, Deb (Mike) Muhlstadt of Mendota, Vicki Johnson of Mendota and Doug (Teresa) Johnson of Aurora, Colo.; three grandchildren, Jarred, Abby and Kyla; and three brothers and two sisters, Beverly Henry of Florida, Harry (Mary) Johnson of New York, Linda Truckenbrod of Mendota, Ronnie (Sandie) Johnson of Colorado and Gary (Sheila) Johnson of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2015; one grandson, Dominic Johnson; and two sisters, Carole Houck and Dorothy Stemmons.
