Obituary

George J. Kerchner, 91, of Mendota died Jan. 11, 2009, in the home of his daughter in Dixon. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. John's Lutheran Church, Mendota. The Rev. Dale Peterson will officiate. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Wednesday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Mr. Kerchner was born Oct. 31, 1917, to Carl Kerchner and Rena (Mann) Kerchner Piller. He married Margaret McConnell on Aug. 20, 1940, in Davenport, Iowa. He farmed in the Mendota area his entire life. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Mendota and of Elks Lodge 212. Survivors include his wife of Mendota; one daughter, Sandy Thompson of Dixon; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Piller of Mendota and Ruth Molln of Ohio, Ill.; four brothers, Wilbert (Carol) Kerchner, Kenneth (Marian) Kerchner and Carl Kerchner, all of Mendota, and Oscar Kerchner of Amboy; one stepsister, Helen Carr of Mendota; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, George Kerchner Jr.; and one sister. Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church or Mendota Area Senior Services.
