Obituary
George R. Steele, 78, of Mendota died Aug. 16, 2016, in his home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, with the Rev. Jerry Graham officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded afterward. Burial will be private.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
George was born April 27, 1938, in Galesburg to Russell and Helen (Grindle) Steele.
He married Genevieve "Jenny" Rose in 1958. George was employed at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg 1956-1961 and then for Phalen Steel Construction Co. for 47 years, serving as vice president of operations before retiring in 2008.
He served in the U.S. Army in Fort Knox, Ky. 1961-1963 and U.S. Army Corps until 1967. He is survived by his wife of Mendota; two daughters, Marci (Mike) Hill of Kentucky and Cathy Steele of Ottawa; son Scott Steele of South Carolina; granddaughter, Kallysta of South Carolina; and brother, Thomas (Becky) Steele of Effingham.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a stepgrandson.
Memorials may be directed to Mendota Lions Club.
