Gilbert Betz, 94, formerly of Mendota, died March 14, 2012, in Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, with the Rev. David Tellinghuisen officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota, with military rites performed by VFW Post 4079. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Mr. Betz was born July 17, 1917, in Mendota to Ezra C. and Charlotte (Pohl) Betz. He married Rosella Herrmann on Sept. 28, 1947, in Mendota. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He was a 1935 graduate of Mendota High School. He farmed in the Mendota area prior to retiring. He lived in the Quincy veterans home for the past six years. He previously attended St. John's Lutheran Church, Mendota. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara (Kirby) Hayward of Mendota; one son, Dennis (Beverly) Betz of Amboy; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on July 5, 1996; two sisters and two brothers. Memorials may be directed to Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy or to the family.
