Obituary

Harold G. Hitchins, 90, of Mendota died Jan. 6, 2012, in Mendota Community Hospital. There will be no services. A private family interment will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. today in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. He was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Mendota to George and Lena (Mathesius) Hitchins . He married Phyllis Anderson on Nov. 8, 1953, in St. John's Lutheran Church, Mendota. He graduated from Mendota High School in 1937. He was a lifelong farmer in Ophir Township before joining the staff of First State Bank, Mendota in 1971. He was named vice president of the bank in 1977 and executive vice president in 1978. He succeeded Robert Shafer as president in 1982 and retired from that position in 1984. He was a member of La Salle County Board for eight years and chairman of its legislative committee. He was a chairman of La Salle County Crime Prevention Commission and director of Illinois Valley Crime Prevention Commission. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Mendota Elks Lodge 1212 and a past exalted ruler of the lodge. He was a former member of Mendota Lions Club and Mendota Golf Club. He is survived by his wife of Mendota; one daughter, Patti (Richard) Setchell of Mendota; two sons, Thomas Hitchins of Wisconsin and John (Kris) Hitchins of west suburban Chicago; seven grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; and one brother, Donald Hitchins of Texas. He was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys. Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society or donor's choice.
