Harold L. Prentice, 78, of Troy Grove died Dec. 4, 2011, in Illinois Valley Community Hospital, Peru. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Peterstown, with the Rev. Gary Blake officiating. Burial will be at Troy Grove Cemetery with military rites provided by VFW Post 4079. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday with rosary in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Mr. Prentice was born July 8, 1933, in Utica to Harold P. and Elizabeth (Bernard) Prentice. He married Margaret Arlene Kidd on June 13, 1953, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dimmick. A graduate of La Salle- Peru Township High School, he served with the U.S. Air Force at the time of the Korean War. He was employed by Wedron Silica and later was plant manager at Prairie States Silica, which became Unimin Corp., in Troy Grove until his retirement. He was a school bus driver for Mendota schools and caretaker at Troy Grove Cemetery for a number of years. He was a member of the American Legion and a former member of Elks Lodge 1212 and Mendota Moose Lodge. He is survived by his wife; four sons, Guy L. (Marie) Prentice of Tallahassee, Fla., Michael T. (Valerie) Prentice of Mahomet, Paul M. Prentice of Chicago and Steven E. Prentice of Troy Grove; one daughter, Ellen L. (Charles) Einhorn of Newton; six grandchildren, Jacob, Ethan and Meghann Einhorn, Daniel and Sarah Prentice and Emily Prentice; two great-grandchildren, Lilith and Katharine Einhorn; and two sisters, Haroldene Salz of Tonica and Donna Zabowski of North Manchester, Ind. He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Locke. Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society.
