Obituary
Helen L. Shimek, 93, of Mendota passed away August 2, 2019 at Mendota Lutheran Home.
Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Church with Father Peter Pilon officiating. Burial will be in Assumption Chapel and Mausoleum, Winfield. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary at Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota.
Helen was born October 1, 1925 in Haugen, WI. to Joseph and Mary (Shamla) Kokesh. She married Joseph Shimek June 27, 1945 in Haugen.
Helen farmed in Wisconsin before and following her marriage until 1947 when the couple moved to Lisle to work on the farms owned and operated by the Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart Monastery. Helen worked many years in the kitchen at Sacred Heart specializing in pastries and desserts. She retired in 1993.
Helen is survived by her two daughters Ann Harris of Dearborn, Missouri and Jan Kahl of Mendota; her sister Dorothy of Barron, Wisconsin; daughter in law Linda Shimek of Greenwood, Indiana; two granddaughters Jennifer Marsh and Stacy Harmon and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2012; her son Joseph; her son in laws Mark Harris and Robert Kahl, her parents, five brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be directed to Holy Cross Church for masses or Mendota Lutheran Home.
