Jack R. Phalen, 65, of Mendota died March 23, 2010, in Mendota Community Hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Holy Cross Church with the Rev. Fredi Gomez-Torres officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendota, with military rites by Mendota Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4079. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Mr. Phalen was born Aug. 16, 1944, in Mendota to Nicholas and Mary Catherine (Biers) Phalen. He married Kathy Corrigan on Nov. 25, 1967. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Mendota Golf Club, Mendota Elks Lodge, Mendota Moose Lodge, Knights of Columbus and VFW Post 4079. He was a truck driver for Gromark for 24 years and worked at Del Monte and Bay Valley Foods before retiring. He is survived by three daughters, Michelle (Greg) Nurnberg of Mendota, Kelly (Matt) Bond of Mendota and Allison (Doug) Buettner of Mendota; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Margaret Frey of Mendota and Cathy (Jack) Kilmartin of Mendota. He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 4, 1989; his parents; two sisters, Nancy Vickrey and Silvia Hessenberger; and one brother, Nick Phalen. Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial to be established later.
