James E. "Smoke" Walters, 78, of Port Charlotte, FL, and formerly of Mendota, passed away on April 21, 2023, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 4-8 p.m. at the Mendota VFW Lodge 4079 (610 Sixth St). Burial will be held at a later date at Restland Cemetery, Mendota with military honors by Mendota VFW Post 4079.
Smoke was born June 4, 1944 in Rochelle to Frederick Sr. and Margaret (Holloway) Walters. He married Ruthann Sorenson on November 30, 1968.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather as well as a friend to many known for being counted on to lend a helping hand or provide support by participating in many parades and veteran events throughout the area. He grew up in Mendota, graduated from Mendota High School om 1963 and then joined the United States Army. He served his country from 1966-1968 including service during the Vietnam War. He later ran his own plumbing business and was a member of the Plumbers Union prior to his retirement. Smoke was a proud military serviceman and member of the VFW, American Legion and Am Vets. He was also a member of the Mendota Moose, Elks and Masonic Lodges.
He is survived by his wife Ruthann of 54 years; three children, Audra (Dan) Pond of Ottawa, Jim (Julie) Walters of Dayton, Texas and Kyle Walters of Mendota. Seven grandchildren, Alex (Samie) Pond, Haley Walters, Chrissy Pond, Lexie Pond, Cole (Chasity) Walters, Austin Walters and Jake Walters; 4 greatgrandchildren, Scarlett, Lauryn, Adri and Blakely; sister Barbi Purvis and sister-in-law Diane (Walters) Ayers. Additional survivors include a loving extended family including in-laws, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Fred Walters, sister, Betty Eich, brother in laws, Keith Eich and Ken Purvis and a great-niece, Taryn Pakenham.
Memorials can be made to the family in honor of James (Smoke) Walters for dissemination at a later date.
