Daniel Shirey, 95, of Mendota died July 23, 2011, in Mendota Lutheran Home. Services will be at at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Cross Church, Mendota, with the Rev. Gary Blake officiating. Burial will be at Precinct Cemetery, Earlville, with military rites by Mendota VFW Post 4079. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Thursday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Mr. Shirey was born June 19, 1916, in Meriden to Daniel C. and Ellen (Loftus) Shirey. He married Lena Marketti on Sept. 28, 1940, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mendota. He graduated with the class of 1934 from Mendota High School. He served in World War II with U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theater of Operations. He was employed by Wayside Press in Mendota as a printer for 43 years before retirement. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Elks Lodge 1212, VFW Post 4079 and Mendota Golf Club. He is survived by five sons, Bill (Janis) Shirey of Mendota, Dan (Sue) Shirey of Mendota, Jim Shirey ofRochelle, Mike (Denise) Shirey of Southlake, Texas, and Thomas (Mary Ellen) Shirey of Dalzell; seven grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 14, 1994. Memorials may be directed to Mendota Lutheran Home or Illinois Valley Hospice.
