Joseph J. Shimek, 91, of Mendota died March 3, 2012, in Mendota Community Hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Holy Cross Church, Mendota, with the Rev. Fredi Gomez-Torres officiating. Burial will be in Assumption Chapel and Mausoleum, Winfield. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. rosary in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Mr. Shimek was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Haugen, Wis., to Frank and Antonia (Kodesh) Shimek. He married Helen Kokesh on June 27, 1945, in Haugen. He farmed in Wisconsin before and following his marriage until 1947 when they moved to Lisle to work on the farms owned and operated by the Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery. After the farms were sold, he was manager of operations for the monastery until he retired in 1997 and moved to Mendota in 2004. He is survived by his wife; one son, Joseph (Linda) Shimek of Auburn, Ind.; two daughters, Jan (Robert) Kahl of Mendota and Ann (Mark) Harris of Dearborn, Mo.; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Dave) Marsh of Platte City, MO. and Stacy (Royce) Harmon of Greenwood, IN.; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Memorials may be directed to Holy Cross Church for Masses or Heritage Health, Mendota.
