Karen Raye Young, 71, of Munford, Ala., formerly of Mendota, died Dec. 7, 2009, in Talladega, Ala. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Morrell officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church Saturday. Arrangements were provided by Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. She was born April 3, 1938, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to William and Edna (Coan) Hempel. She married Victor Young Jr. on Feb. 20, 1961, in France. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mendota. She had lived in Munford for the past five years. She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Bright of Munford and Janice Cox of Missouri; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Bynum and Barb Anderson, both of Iowa; and one brother, Don Hempel of Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband in December 1995; and her parents. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.
