Leo S. Classon, 96, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Mendota, died Jan. 13, 2008, in Penrose Main Hospital, Colorado Springs. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, with the Rev. Gale Brandner officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Mr. Classon was born in Marseilles on Oct. 11, 1911, to Silas and Ida Classon. He married Virginia Ferguson on Aug. 16, 1937. He grew up on a farm near Norway, graduated from Sheridan High School and worked at the Norway store. He and his wife owned and operated three grocery stores in Mendota, going from a neighborhood Royal Blue Store to the downtown store and finally Classon?s Super Foods on the west side of Mendota. They retired and moved to Colorado Springs in 1995. He was a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club and Mendota Elks Club. He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Carol (Elliott) Philofsky of Colorado Springs; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald L. Classon; and five siblings.
