Paul "Dake" Schmitz, 76, of Mendota died May 15, 2012, in Rockford Memorial Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church, Mendota, with the Revs. Michael Morrell and Dan Sherstad officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday in the church. Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Schmitz was born Dec. 14, 1935, in La Salle to John and Norine (Elsesser) Schmitz. He married Carla Bentley on Sept. 27, 1975, in Mendota. He served two years in the U.S. Army. He worked at Conco Inc. and Black Bros. as a tool and die maker before retiring. He was a devout Christian and an avid baseball fan, who loved to watch and play the game. Survivors include his wife; one son, Rick (Jody) Bottom of Mendota; one daughter, Doreen (Jim) Chandler of Mendota; five grandchildren; one brother, Bob (Kathy) Schmitz of Troy Grove; one sister, Ruth (Raye) Klopfenstein of Bowling Green, Ohio; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother. Memorials may be directed to the family to be used for charities that Mr. Schmitz loved.
