Obituary

Philip Ralph Zinke, 76, of Mendota, passed away Thursday night, March 7, 2024 at Loyola University Medical Hospital, Chicago.

Philip was born in Mendota, the son of Albert and Caroline (Kerchner) Zinke (both deceased) and step-son to Harry Gower (deceased).

Following graduation from Mendota High School in 1966, Phil served in the United States Navy for 4 years. Some of his places of operation included: Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Philippines, Da Nang Harbor, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan and back to San Diego, California. He was on the Iwo Jima LPH-2 as well as the USS Iowa, USS Princeton, USS Cacapon, and USS Tortuga. Phil married Diane (Stevenson) on May 1,1971 at Holy Cross Church, Mendota where he is a member. Philip worked for Brown Sheet Metal and Black Bros Co. in the welding and fabricating department and was foreman for over 25 years. He retired from Black Bros Co. after 31 years. Phil then worked for Mendota Community Hospital and retired after 5 1/2 years. During this time Phil also ran a small engine and welding shop and made trailers. He loved woodworking and fishing. Phil rebuilt several classic Mustang cars, a 1972 El Camino, and a 1984 Chevy Silverado truck. Having fully retired in 2010, he and his wife, Diane, of almost 53 married years, were able to travel all 50 states many times and Canada. Their favorite adventures were three Alaskan cruises, Yellowstone National Park and Teton National Park.

Philip is survived by his beloved wife, Diane, daughters Jennifer (Brian) Davis of Hudson and Julie (Jeff) Hammann of Carlinville and sister Betty Dufour of Mendota. He is also survived by grandchildren Matthew Davis, Elizabeth Hammann, William Davis and Grant Hammann.

Phil was preceded in death by his brother Elmer Zinke and step-sister Alice Radtke. Phil is survived by many nieces and nephews, sisters in law Marilyn Sapp and Barb Zinke. Philip was truly blessed with his best friend and lovely wife, Diane, two beautiful daughters, Jennifer and Julie, and 4 wonderful grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth, William, and Grant.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., with services immediately following and a flag presentation and Taps by Mendota VFW Post 4070. Private burial will be at a later date at Wisner Cemetery.
