Richard W. Shorter, 55, of Mendota died Dec. 17, 2015, in Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Cremation rites have been accorded.

He was born Sept. 2, 1960, in Chicago to Kenneth and Shirley (Phillips) Shorter. He married Kay Shifflette on Sept. 18, 1982.

He liked working on cars, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Kay of Mendota; one son, Joshua (Jennifer) Shorter, Ohio; two daughters, Stephanie (Derek) Mumm of Coal City and Mindy (Mike) Sandel of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Kelly, Evan and Aaron Mumm, Madison and Makenzie Sandel and Landon and Audrey Shorter; three brothers, William (Phyllis) Shorter, Edward "Allen" (Kathy) Shorter, and Ken (Missy) Shorter; eight sisters, Shirley Chavera, Danette Shorter, Donna (Mark) Spenader, Lisa Wilke, Tammy (Jim) Womack, Tracy (Luke) Ferrara, Melissa Jones and Danita Wimberly.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
