Robert "Bob" Barnett, 88,
of Mendota passed away
unexpectedly May 27, 2015,
in his home.
A memorial visitation to
celebrate his wonderful life
will be 1-4 p.m. June 6 in
Merritt Funeral Home,
Mendota.
He was born Sept. 21,
1926, in Aurora to Herschel
and Grace (Holcomb) Barnett.
Bob proudly served in the
U.S. Army, defending his
country in World War II.
After his military service, he
earned an accounting degree.
He then became a U.S.
Postal Mail Carrier for 37
years. He also held a variety
of part-time jobs spanning
Aurora, to Plano, to Mendota;
one of which was at
the Sunnymere Nursing
Home in Aurora, where he
met his wife, Eileen, of
more than 50 years.
After living the "horse
farm life" raising their
daughter, Cindy, in Plano,
they built their retirement
home in Mendota where
Bob is best known for working
at the local car wash.
In some of his free time, he
poured molds for Eileen's
ceramic business known as
The Hen's Roost.
Bob never met a stranger
and rarely stopped smiling.
He was a dog lover through
and through; from the regular,
wagging visitors to the
car wash, to his own fourlegged
family members, to
even seeing dog commercials
between the Bears,
Bulls or Cubs games, that always
brightened his day. He
loved catching up with
friends over coffee or a
meal. Even following the recent
loss of his wife, Eileen,
he woke up each morning
with vigor, ready to take on
the next day's challenges
and lend an ear, hand or
shirt off his back to help
whomever needed it.
He is survived by one
daughter, Cindy (Don)
Brummels of Plano; and
one granddaughter, Kelsey
Hendry (Devin Johnson) of
Chicago.
He was preceded in
deawth by his wife on
March 30 of this year; three
sisters and one brother.
The family requests that
in lieu of flowers, memorials
in his name be given to the
K-9 Unit of Mendota Police
Department.
