Scott E. Long, 53, of Mendota died April 29, 2009, in Mendota Community Hospital after a nearly two year battle with brain cancer. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church, Mendota, with the Rev. Michael Morrell officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Mr. Long was born Feb. 10, 1956, in Rockford to Kenneth and Joy (Trampel) Long. He married Kathy Gromann on June 28, 1980, in Mendota. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Elks Lodge 1212. He was a 1974 graduate of Mendota High School and a graduate of Lewis University. He joined Mendota Police Department where he served for nine years before entering the Illinois State Police Academy in 1988, graduating in October of that year. He first served in District 2 and in 1990 transferred to District 17, where he served until retiring in 2007. He was a member of Illinois Police Association and Fraternal Order of Police. He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Mendota; one son, Kyle Long of Mendota; one daughter, Samantha Long of Mendota; his father, Kenneth Long of Oregon; one brother, Jan (Jenny) Long of Rockford; and two sisters, Carol (Kenneth) Vesel of Bloomington, and Kathy (Monte) Aspenson of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his mother. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.
