Obituary

Temple V. Burger, 80, of Mendota died Dec. 17, 2010, in his home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Cross Church , Mendota , with the Rev. Gary Blake officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Mr. Burger was born Aug. 4, 1930, in Warsaw, Ill., to John and Goldie (Mekeel) Burger.

He married Fern Lueders on
Dec. 6, 1951, in DeWitt, Iowa. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Mendota Elks Lodge 1212, Knights of Columbus and Mendota Golf Club. He graduated from St. Joseph High School, DeWitt. He served from 1948 until 1952 in the U.S. Navy. He entered the insurance business in 1953 and began his career with State Farm Insurance in 1963. He was promoted to superintendent of claims at the Peru office in 1971. He moved from Bettendorf, Iowa to Mendota in 1972. He retired from State Farm in 1990. Mr. Burger was very passionate about sports. He played semi-professional baseball for four years. He later became an avid and tournament golfer. During his senior years, he competed in the News-Tribune Area-Wide Men's Golf Tournament, winning the senior class three times. He was a huge supporter and follower of his grandchildren's sporting events. Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Patti (Mike) Schultz of Independence, Mo., Chris (Kurt) Holdenrid of Mendota and Cathy (Gus) Holland of Wheaton; three sons, Jim of Mendota, Steve (Julie) of Rockford and Jeff (Mary Beth) of Bloomington; 13 grandchildren, Carrie (Ian) Oser, Brad Burger, Blake Burger, Cameron, Alexa and Avri Schultz, Niki (Ryan) Castle, Adam Holdenrid, Lauren and Emily Burger, Elle, Peri and Aaron Holland; one great-grandchild, Madden Castle; and one sister, Juliana Smith of Moline. He was preceded in deathby one brother, Jack.
