Thomas Judson Smith, 83, of Mendota passed away January 21, 2021 at OSF St. Paul Medical Center, Mendota after a brief illness.

Tom was born on April 11, 1937 in Oak Park, Illinois, the son of Steven and Helen (Shales) Smith.

Tom is preceded in death by his wife, Phyliss (Hughes) Smith who passed away in June of 2017. They were married on September 27, 1958 in La Grange, Illinois and became residents of Mendota in 1984. When they first moved to Mendota, Tom opened Smith's Flower and Greenhouse and established ENP Inc., which is still in operation today.

Tom graduated from Lyons Township High School in 1955 then served in the United States Air Force until his marriage to Phyliss.

Tom had many interests outside of his work that he enjoyed; traveling, gardening, his family and he particularly enjoyed his golf game. All of the family golfers fondly remember the many fun and sometimes frustrating games played at the Mendota Golf Club course digging up the turf.

He is survived by his son, Thomas Smith Jr. and partner Dave VanDanacker, daughters Jana (Patrick) Trainer and Pamela (Craig) Sears. He is also survived by his grandchildren Bradley, Diana, Amanda, Taylor, Samantha and Nicholas and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was was preceded in death by his parents, brother Horton Smith and sister Elaine (Smith) Freetly.

A celebration of life will be planned in the near future. Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota is assisting the family.
