Verda Volkert, 84, of Mendota died Dec. 13, 2011, in Mendota Community Hospital. A private service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, with the Rev. Dale Peterson officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota. There will be no visitation. She was born Sept. 29, 1927, in Maytown to Paul and Frances (Tone) Kessel. She married LaVerne Volkert on July 7, 1946, in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Compton. Mrs. Volkert was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Mendota, and its Altar Guild. She was a selfemployed beautician in Mendota for many years. She is survived by two sons, Russell (Sherry) Volkert of Mendota and Richard (Polly) Volkert of Ottawa; six grandchildren, Tim, Kelly, Kim, Jeff, Cindy and Doug; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bob Kessel of Peru, Paul Kessel of Oglesby and Ron Kessel of Silver Springs, Fla.; and two sisters, Marge Sibigtroth of Ohio, Ill., and Millie Kieras of Peru. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985; one great-granddaughter, Lauren; two brothers; three sisters; and a brother in infancy. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.
